Dr. DUAN, Lingyu is a Full Professor with National Engineering Laboratory of Video Technology (NELVT), School of Electronics Engineering and Computer Science, Peking University, China, and has served as the Associate Director of the Rapid-Rich Object Search Laboratory (ROSE), a joint lab between Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore, and Peking University (PKU), China since 2012. He is also the Associate Director of PKU-NTU Joint Research Institute (JRI) since 2015. He was a Visiting Associate Professor with the school of EEE, NTU, from 30 Nov. 2013 - 30 Nov. 2015. Before he joined PKU, he was a Research Scientist with the Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R), Singapore, from Mar. 2003 to Aug. 2008. He obtained his M.Sc. degree in automation from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), China, in 1999, his M.Sc. degree in computer science from the National University of Singapore (NUS), Singapore, in 2002, and the Ph.D. degree in information technology from The University of Newcastle, Australia, in 2008, respectively. His research interests include multimedia indexing, search, and retrieval, mobile visual search, visual feature coding, and video analytics, etc.

Dr. DUAN has published over 130 research papers in international journals and conferences such as IEEE T-PAMI, IJCV, IEEE T-IP, IEEE T-MM, IEEE MM, ICCV, CVPR, ACM MM, IJCAI, AAAI, DCC, ICME, ICIP, ICASSP, etc. He received the EURASIP Journal on Image and Video Processing Best Paper Award in 2015, the Ministry of Education (MOE) Technology Invention Award (First Prize) in 2016, the National Information Technology Standardization Technical Committee "Standardization Work Outstanding Person" Award in 2015. He has served in the Technical Program Committee of various international conferences including IEEE ICME, IEEE ICIP, ACM Multimedia, ACM ICMR, etc. He is now a member of Multimedia Systems & Applications Technical Committee (MSATC). He was a Co-Editor of MPEG Compact Descriptor for Visual Search (CDVS) Standard (ISO/IEC 15938-13), and is serving as a Co-Chair of MPEG Compact Descriptor for Video Analytics (CDVA).

Dr. DUAN's recent major achievements focus on the topic of compact representation of visual features and high-performance image search. From Nov. 2010 to Oct. 2014, he worked with MPEG and made significant contribution in the completed MPEG-CDVS standard. CDVS provides a standardized bitstream syntax of compact descriptors to enable interoperability in low bit rate image search and augmented reality applications. Remarkable improvements were achieved in reducing the size of image feature data and in reducing the computation and memory footprint in the feature extraction process. The suite of CDVS technologies have been successfully deployed, which impact visual search products/services of leading Internet companies like Tencent (WeChat) and Baidu (Image Search Engine). Prior to 2010, his research was basically focused on multimedia (semantic) content analysis, especially in the domains of broadcast sports videos and TV commercial videos.
